What is Oversized/Over-length?

Oversized/over-length is a truckload shipping mode to transport freight that weighs more than 80,000 pounds. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) enforces the following federal freight weight maximums:

  • 80,000 pound gross vehicle weight (GVW)
  • 34,000 pound tandem axle
  • 20,000 pound single axle

FHWA requires motor carriers to obtain oversize/overweight load permits in the state(s) they travel. Shippers pay carriers for these permit fees, as well as reweigh accessorial charges if freight weight isn't accurate prior to loading.
