Short for hazardous materials, substances that contain chemical or biological properties.

What is Hazmat?

Hazmat is an abbreviated term for hazardous materials. Hazmat freight includes:

  • Flammable liquids
  • Explosives
  • Toxic chemicals
  • Radioactive materials
  • Corrosive substances 

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation and regulates the safe handling, transportation, and delivery of hazmat freight. PHMSA requires shippers, carriers, drivers, and all hazmat handlers to follow the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) under the 49 CFR, Parts 100-185.
