What is Oversized/Over-length?

Oversized or over-length are terms used to describe non-standard sized items that take up more room than a typical pallet. Nearly all carriers charge an accessorial for these items. Since a non-standard shape can make efficient loading difficult, the accessorial charge is there to make up for the loss of freight that would not be able to travel along in the same shipment.

The charge is common with LTL shipments, but not limited to them.

This category can also include items that are larger, heavier, or longer than the standard legal dimensions for road transportation. Oversized shipments may require special considerations, permits, and handling procedures to ensure safe and compliant transportation.
