What is a Bill of Lading (BoL)?

A Bill of Lading (BoL) is a legal document that’s required for freight shipments. The following details are included on a Bill of Lading:

  • Details of the shipper and receiver
  • Contents of the shipment including weight, quantity, packaging, etc.
  • Hazardous materials designation
  • Pickup date

There are different types of BoLs for use in various situations and transport modes. It is one of many documents that shippers need to include with their freight. Providing the right documents ensures the smooth transfer of freight during deliveries and rapid clearance during routine inspections.
