What is Transportation Management System (TMS)?

A transportation management system (TMS) is a software that organizes supply chain data and optimizes carrier services, onboarding, and compliance.

Electronic data interchange (EDI) and application programming interface (API) are the two most common digital platforms used within TMSs to perform the following tasks:

  • Tender loads
  • Track freight shipments
  • Send documentation like invoices and Bills of Lading

Shippers use their business's TMS to onboard carriers or utilize the carrier's TMS to book, track, and complete shipments.
