What is Rail Drayage?

Rail drayage is a short haul service that moves freight by truck from a rail yard to a nearby destination, usually a warehouse or distribution center. The service can also work the other way around, when a manufacturing center needs freight shipments sent directly to a rail line.

The service is completed in the following steps:

  1. A cargo container arrives at a rail terminal.
  2. The container is transloaded from rail to a truck.
  3. A truck transports the cargo container to a nearby facility.
  4. The container is unloaded at the facility.
  5. After unloading, the container is taken back to the rail terminal and placed back into circulation.
