What is a Freight Bill Audit Service?

A freight bill audit may review all documents involved in the shipping process to check for accuracy. Information subject to an audit may include:

  • Shipper and Carrier Information
  • Mileage
  • Shipment weights
  • Bill of Lading (BOL)
  • Tracking Numbers
  • Applied Discounts
  • Final Price Charged

This process has been referred to as freight bill audit and pay. Carriers can have pre-audit checks that ensure the accuracy of invoices before they are sent out to shippers.

Shippers can have in-house audit services or contract with another company to do so. The freight audit reviews invoices and compares it to the services rendered as well as to the existing contract. If there are differences, they can then submit them to the carrier for correction before submitting payment.
