Detention fee is an accessorial charge carriers bill shippers when a load is held at the pickup or delivery location longer than the allotted two-hour dwell time or “free time.”
Shippers risk detention fees from $80 to $100 per hour every hour dwell time is exceeded.
Detention and demurrage fees are similar. Shippers receive detention fees for holding loads at a facility outside of a port of entry, whereas demurrage fees are for loads held inside of a port of entry or terminal.
