FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NORFOLK VA DRAYAGE

How long will it take to get my container(s) out of the Norfolk Terminal?
The time it will take to get your container(s) out of the port will depend on a number of factors. How congested the terminal is, what time your pickup is scheduled for, and whether you need to pay for demurrage fees all play a role.

When you reach out to our team, we’ll give you an honest & accurate estimate of when your containers can be picked up and delivered. Communication is key when it comes to drayage service, which is why it’s one of our top priorities.
Who owns Norfolk International Terminal?
The Virginia Port Authority owns the Norfolk International Terminal. While the Virginia Port Authority owns NIT, the operations are run by Norfolk International Terminals Inc.
How many terminals are in Norfolk?
NIT consists of two terminals, the North Terminal and South Terminal. The Central Rail Yard serves as a third major area within the terminal.
How deep is the port of Norfolk?
The port of Norfolk is dredged to 50-feet deep. This depth actually makes it possible for NIT to handle Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). This is a major advantage over smaller ports that can’t handle ships of this size.
Is Norfolk a good terminal to import and export from?
NIT is comparable to other major ports in the U.S. in terms of efficiency and speed. Some notable upgrades at NIT have enhanced overall efficiency. Starting in 2018, multiple projects expanded NIT’s operating capacity.

Projects included:

• $452 million terminal optimization project
• 2 new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes
• 60 additional automated rail-mounted gantry cranes
• 30 new container stacks

Altogether, these enhancements led to a 46% overall capacity increase. NIT will continue to see positive growth thanks in part to a planned $72 million investment from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
